A non exhaustive revision about the problematic caused by treatment of categorical traits in animal breeeding is carried out. The most important traits are cited. The threshold model which supposes the existence of a conceptual continue underlying aleatory variable with a joint distribution with the categorical variable, has general consequences as well as other consequences which derive from the fitting of the underlying variable to a genetic model. This is analysed. The problem of parameter estimation is laid and also the methods used by different authors are explained. Also the methods to predict sire genetic merits are told, using linear models (BLUP) as well as non-linear models when considering the variances of the aleatory effects known. Methods to estimate these variances are commented as well as the genetic prediction when these variances are unknown
