The effects of auxin paints in conjunction with containment pruning on peach and nectarine trees

The effects of containment pruning and auxin paint application on the peach cultivar "Babygold 7" and in the nectarine "Crimson Gold" (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) have been studied. The application of 1 p. 100 to the pruning cuts was effective inhibiting shoot regrowth near the pruning cut, but gummosis was promoted on the treated wound. Lower concentrations were more effective when sprayed as aqueous solutions to the branch than when applied as pruning paints. Yields of lowered-down and NAA painted trees where reduced in the first year although fruit size increased, and total tree growth was not affected when compared with normally pruned trees. The number of shoots emerging in the lower part of the tree allowed the reconstruction of the canopy, but differences in the response of the two varieties have been observed
