Evaluation of row intercropping of potato broad bean and corn under Jordan Valley conditions

Broad bean (Vicia faba L.) Cyprus local cultivar, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), Sponta cultivar and forage corn purchased from the local market were grown in different row arrangements (1 row:1 row; 1 row:2 rows and 2 rows:2 rows) forming 15 combinations including the growing of each crop solely. The highest monetary return obtained at the first planting date was potato/broad bean in 2:2, 1:1, and 1:2 row combinations, resulting in an increase of about 950.-J.D.;937.-J.D.824.-J.D. and 793.-J.D. per hectare, respectively, over the broad bean sole crop per hectare, and about 1224.-J.D.; 1067.-J.D., respectively, over the potato sole crop per hectare. Intercropping was more efficient than sole cropping, as judged by the land equivalent ratio (LER) in almost all the combinations tested at both planting dates. Inercropping seems to have a potential under Jordan Valley conditions; however, when intercropping system is used, the crop prices at the end of the growing season should be considered in order to get the maximum net return
