Increased utilization of coconut by-products in broiler rations [Philippines]

The study revealed that 45% copra/paring meals could be fed to broilers, although a slight depression in feed intake in some of the trials was obtained. Paring meal is a better feed for broilers than copra meal. Pelleting copra/paring meal feeds is not economically advantageous considering time, labor and cost. Treating the by-products with cellulase and organisms did not improve cell wall breakdown and feeding value. If coconut oil is increased to 8 or 9% the use of high levels of coconut by-products can reduce the amounts of yellow corn in rations and soybean oil meal from 50 to 18% and from 27 to 10%, respectively. However, increasing coconut by-products in broiler rations to higher levels requires the use of 6 to 14% fish meal depending on the ration's protein content
