Growth, yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) at four methods of planting and levels of irrigation [Philippines]

Leaf area, leaf length, grade index and nicotine content of the standard leaves were significantly affected by the interaction of methods of planting and levels of irrigation. In all methods of planting, leaf area and leaf length increased with increasing level of irrigation but the quality of leaves decreased. Nicotine content of the standard leaves increased with increasing level of irrigation in the flat and narrow ridge methods of planting, but decreased in the furrow and broad ridge methods. Method of planting did not affect growth and yield except grade index and reducing sugar content of the standard leaves. Level of irrigation significantly affected the growth, leaf characteristics, grade index and chemical content of the leaf. No significant correlation was found between root growth and nicotine content of the leaf. However, a significant negative association was observed between reducing sugar content and the different root growth parameters. Applying 25 percent of the potential evapotranspiration at 14 days interval up to 76 DAT was sufficient for the tobacco plant to produce yield similar with the 100 percent application of the potential water requirement
