Biochemical bases of resistance to Java black rot [Diplodia tubericola (Ell. Ev.) Taubenh.] in sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] [Philippines]

Furanoterpenes (LD50 = 169.92 micron l of 1.37 A/g) and polyphenols (LD50 = 3.91 mg/g) caused 50% spore inhibition after 22.30 and 55.84 hr, respectively. Coumarin synthesis was negligibly low to cause any substantial spore inhibition. The in vitro assays showed that, with the exception of coumarin A and polyphenol A, most furanoterpenes-ipomeamarone, dehydroipomeamarone, ipomeamaronol, substances B, C and D are most toxic to Diplodia tubericola. These substances strongly inhibited spore germination and mycelial growth with the subsequent production of abnormal spores and variants to the normal hyphal morphology. Thus, accumulation of these metabolites are responsible for the defense reaction of the sweet potato to D. tubericola
