Electrophoretic analysis of genetic polymorphism in natural populations of the green mussel, Perna viridis L. (Mollusca:mytilidae)
1985
Demayo, C.G.
Similarity index for esterase was computed among the three different localities, different size and tissues of the mussels. For the different localities: Sta Margarita and Bacoor populations share 100% common bands while Pagbilao and Sta. Margarita, Pagbilao and Cavite [Philippines] share only 96.15% common bands. This result was attributed to the absence of band number 9 in Pagbilao populations. For the different sizes, no pattern of similarity of esterase isozymes were observed in successive size ranges, indicating that the developmental stage has an effect on the type of esterase band patterns that will be observed. Qualitative examination of the gels reveal that these changes are concentrated in Est-4 zone. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) was found to be polymorphic also due to the existence of three major phenotypes: one consisting of a fast migrating band, designated as MDH-B, another with a slow-migrating band designated as MDH-A, and lastly, a heterozygote with three bands designated as MDA-AB. Bacoor populations showed these phenotypes with varying frequencies
