Development of tar spot (Phyllachora sorghi) on susceptible and resistant sorghum [Sorghum bicolor] lines [Philippines]
1986
Paderes, E.P. | Dalmacio, S.C.
The rate of tar spot development on one susceptible (Acc. 1127) and two resistant (Acc. 2059 and BTx 623) sorghum lines were compared based on percentage leaf area infected and stromatal count. The r-values based on percent leaf area infected were 0.0877, 0.0512 and 0.0488 per day on Acc.1127, Acc. 2059 and BTx 623, respectively. Based on stromatal count, tar spot developed at the rate of 3.08, 0.46 and 0.23 stromata per 3 cm square leaf area per day on Acc. 1127, Acc. 2059 and BTx 623, respectively. The number of stromata formed over the 4-week assessment period were 63.8, 10.6 and 5.2 stromata per 3 m square leaf area on the respective sorghum lines. The rate-reducing resistance in Acc. 2059 and BTx 623 may be attributed partly to the reduction in infection efficiency and the initial number of stromata
