Multiplication system for white potato (Solanum tuberosum) in the lowlands [Philippines]

The lack of rapid multiplication system for the lowlands is the major constraint for the expansion of the lowland potato program. A workable system for the lowlands which combines tissue culture and stem cuttings have been developed using soil covers during establishment of planting materials. Mulching with string-type polystyrene at 0.022 g cm-2 effected 96 to 100% survival of stem cuttings compared with 6.7% for the unmulched control. Shredded white paper, as well as bits of corn cobs which are readily available in most farms, gives similar high percentage of survival and shorter times to root emergence and shoot regrowth as polystyrene. This system permits multiplication of rooted stem cuttings before the cool months to take full advantage of the cool season for actual field production. Field planting of rooted stem cuttings mulched with bits of corn cobs indicate their potential as planting material in the lowlands
