The germination sensitivity of three cowpea varieties to low osmotic potential of the media varied. UPL CP2 was relatively less sensitive in rate, uniformity and total germination compared to UPL CP5 and BPI CP2. Good germinability, however, did not ensure maximum seedling emergence since under low soil moisture content, seedling emergence of UPL CP2 was lowest. Germination and seedling emergence were maximum in the soil media (Lipa clay loam) with an initial moisture content of 30% which was almost the same as the field capacity of the soil (32.67%). In the soil with an initial moisture content of 20% germination was considerably reduced and emergence was zero. Seed pretreatments only caused a slight advance in seed germination but did not affect subsequent seedling emergence and establishment
