Breeding wheats with resistance to Helminthosporium sativum in Zambia

The Mexican wheat cultivars developed in the 1970s are unsuitable for production during the rainy season in Zambia, due to their susceptibility to foliar diseases and head blight caused by Helminthosporium sativum. Several sources of resistance have now been detected in new germplasm from CIMMYT and in Brazilian wheats. Crosses are being made in Zambia to increase the level of resistance and adaptation. Selected lines yield up to 3 t/ha in tests, and the first variety has been released. The prospects for rainfed wheat production with resistant cultivars is good
