The following reference values were es tablished in 340 urine samples obtained from clinically healthy cows in 2 herds, during 2 successive years: whole mean +- s pH 7.8+0.715; acid-base excretion (ABE) (method of KUTAS, 1965) 89.60+-91.01; s tabulation pH 7.57+-0.817 and ABE 75.93+-75.99 mEq/1. Both constituents were significantly higher during the green forage season (May-October) (p0.001). 96.12; green forages season pH 7.85 +- 0.36 and ABE 112.99 +-. They were also significantly and positively correlated: r (whole) =0.476; r (s tabulation) = +0.734; r (green forages season) = +0.584 (p0.001). The assessment of the urinary pH and ABE is recommended as valuable and simple methods for diagnosing the acid-base status disturbances
