Influence of deposited sediment from mines on structure and productivity on mangrove forest in Pang-nga province [Southern of Thailand]

The results indicated that high deposited sediment was found at the forest edge where the area was rather flat. The amount deposited sediment decreased from the river bank to the inland side. The rate of deposited sediment from the tin mines to mangrove forest in this area was approximately 2.3 cm/yr. The deposited sediment was composed mainly of clay with low organic matter content. The species composition of mangrove forest was not affected by the deposited sediment. Aegiceras corniculatum was the only species that seemed to be common in this area. This species was rarely found in the mangrove forest with no mining activity disturbance. The deposited sediment affected species zonation, density and growth rates of tree species and seedlings to a large extent. However, in order to conserve the natural mangrove forest and maintain the ecological balance of mangrove ecosystem, the well for collection of sediment from mines prior to discharge to mangrove area must be established.
