Effects of branch girdling on total nonstructural carbohydrates and total nitrogen contents in relation to flowering of two litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) varieties

Results showed that girdling did not increase percent flowering in the Hong-Huay litci. For the O-Hea variety, branch girdling during September to December resulted in an increase in percent of flowering with the maximal flowering percentage obtained when the branches were girdled in October in the south portion and November in the north portion of the tree. Total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) contents in leaves and terminal shoots of the girdled branches tended to be higher than those of the ungirdled ones. Totan nitrogen (TN0) contents in branches of both varieties increased progressively from August to December except in O-Hea in which TN slightly decreased in October. The TN content in leaves decreased gradually and reached the maximum level in January. TN contents in leaves and terminal shoots of the girdled branches tended to be slightly lower than those of the ungirdled ones. TN contents in branches which were analyzed in January in Hong-Huay variety were related linearly with percent flowering. The higher the TN contents in branches the lower the flowering percentage. C/N (TNC/TN) ratio of leaves and terminal shoots of both varieties increased prior to flowering. From November to June no more callus was produced to heal girdled branches. Callus proliferation in O-Hea variety was slower than that in Hong-Huay. In Hong-Huay variety a small amount of leaves was abscised about 4-5 months after girdling. More severe abscission was evident in the O-Hea variety. This was particularly true for the branches girdled in August and September
