The inheritance of some quantitative characters in soybean

Parents, F1, F2 and first generation backcrosses (B1 and B2) of a soybean cross (Evans x SRF-100) were grown to obtain genetic information pertaining to grain yield and 9 other agronomic characters. The F1 deviated from the mid parent values for days to flowering, plant height, primary branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/plant, yield/plant and protein content indicating a sizeable amount of non-additive gene action for those traits. Heritability estimated were very high for oil content, seeds/pod, plant height, days to flowering and protein content, at the same time characters were less influenced by environmental factors. Heritability values both narrow and broad sense were very close to each other for majority of the characters indicating additive gene effects for those characters. Significant additive effects were encountered for days to flowering, days to maturity, 1000-seed weight and oil content. Epistasis was found to contribute significantly to days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, oil content and protein content. No epistasis was detected for primary branches per plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod, and yield/plant indicating that estimates of gene effects for those characters were free from linkage bias. Duplicate epistasis were detected for days to flowering, days to maturity and oil content suggesting difficulty encountered in selecting early maturity and high oil content in the cross
