Study of green forage as feed for the rabbit

A preliminary study of green forages for feeding meat rabbits was investigated to determine the responses of growing rabbits to various green forages. The experiment included 5 groups of 6 rabbits each. Each group was fed with one of the following green forages (corn, para-grass, Napier grass, Leucaena, and hairy indigo). It was found that the growth rate, dressing percentage and chemical composition of meat in each group were medium. The rabbits fed with Leucaena showed the symptoms of mimosine poisoning. The rabbits were slaughtered after feeding trials and their carcasses were examined. The average dressing percentage was 46.48 percent and meat bone ratio was 2.1: 1. The protein content of edible meat was high (19.8 percent) and fat content was low (2.1 percent). The group fed with the hairy indigo showed a normal growth rate which indicated that this variety of indigo could be used safely for feeding the rabbit
