Comparative study of efficacy of growth promotants and anthelmintics in starter, grower and finisher rations on pig performance

Two-hundred and forty samples of fresh vegetables, including Chinese white cabbage, lettuce, Chinese parsley, spring-onion, swamp cabbage, celery, chives and chinese cabbage were investigated for presence of parasitic eggs and larvae, using the sedimentation method with lipon-V solugion (Lion Corporation Thailand Ltd.) (Specific gravity 1.010), both before and after washing with a vegetable cleaning solution. Before washing, 95.83% of samples were contaminated; 77.59% with nematode larvae 36.66% with hookworm eggs, 30.83% with Ascaris eggs, 4.58% with richuris eggs, 1.66% with trematode eggs of the family Opis-thorchidae, 0.83% with trematode eggs of the family Fasciolidae, and 4.16% with mites, After washing, a significantly lower percentage of samples, 37.08% (P0.05), were contaminated;28.33% with nematode larvae, 7.50% with hookworm eggs, 3.75% with Ascaris eggs, 1.25% with trichuris eggs, 0.41% with trematode eggs of the family Fascioliudae, and 0.41% with mites. It was concluded that most fresh vegetables sold in this market were contaminated with parasitic eggs and larvae and that the incidence was significantly reduced by washing with vegetables cleaning solution
