Studies on the nitrate reductase and the yields of paddy (Oryza sativa L.) in response to different types of nitrogenous fertilizer applications

Results showed that enzyme activity in root was highest when the plants were 15 days old and decreased gradually to the minimum when the plant reached 105 days old. Enzyme activity in the leaves, when the fertilizers were not applied through leaves, was also highest at the age of 15 days old and gradually decreased up to the age of 105 days. However, when the applications of fertilizers were done through both roots and leaves enzyme activity in leaves was highest at 45 days old. Dried weights of roots and leaves were inversely proportional to enzyme activity. However, the height of the paddy plant was directly proportional to enzyme activity. Higher yield corresponded to the higher activity of the enzyme resulting from the application of nitrogenous fertilizers. Total investment cost was highest with the plot where foliar application was done. The plot with urea gave the highest yield benefit although, the highest net profit per rai was obtained from the plot where the fertilizer was applied only through the roots. Results showed that activity of enzyme was directly correlated with protein content in paddy
