Studies on some techniques for increasing yield of cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.) : Studies on propagation of cashew (Anacardium occidentale)

Several methods of vegetative propagation namely; layering, cutting, grafting and topworking were studied. The results indicated that cashew nut layering treated with indolebutyric acid (IBA) at the concentration of 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, 8,000, 10,000 ppm and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at the concentration of 2,000 ppm had no significant difference and gave the best rooting. Softwood and semi-hardwood stem cutting even treated IBA or NAA had no evidence of rooting ability. Plate budding and bark grafting in April, 1980 was the best method and significantly different from T and chip budding and from Side and cleftgrafting when using green budwood. T budding was the worst when brown budwood was used as scion. The success of grafting depend on season and methodology. Grafting in April when using green budwood was better than August and December except that of side grafting which gave the best in August. The suitable method for topworking of cashew nut trees were bark grafting which was better than plate budding when using green budwood as a scion
