Leaf characteristics, leaf index and leaf area, were used to identify the banana cvs 'Robusta' and 'Giant Cavendish'. The large and highly significant differences (P = 0.005) in leaf index between the cultivars, and its insensitivity to water and N use supports it as a good diagnostic characteristic. Leaf area differences were similarly large but showed some sensitivity. Two discriminant functions are presented using a single character and 2 leaves (leaves 8 and 11) or 2 characters of a single leaf (leaf 8)
