Preliminary investigation into the prospects for import substitution in livestock feed ingredients
1982
The scale of importation of the major livestock feed ingredients corn and soyabean meal in Trinidad and Tobago for the period 1977-81 is presented. More than 89 % of this is for feed for non-ruminant livestock i.e. poultry and pigs. The projected demand for poultry and pig feeds to 1990 is tabulated. Cassava is suggested as the most suitable carbohydrate to substitute for corn and the agronomic characteristics and production factors are discussed. Cassava leaf protein, single cell protein and rendered offals are identified as potential protein feed ingredients
