The impact of sugarcane cultivation on three Oxisols from Vanua Levu, Fiji

Three sites which had been under native vegetation were studied over 6 years of sugarcane cultivation using normal farm operations. Topsoil properties including pH, organic C, cation exchange capacity (CEC), 15 bar water retention, bulk density, phosphate retention and exchangeable Ca and Mg were monitored annually. Most of the observed changes could be related to the decline in organic matter and CEC. A gradual decline in bases indicates that insufficient amounts of bases were being added to compensate for crop removal. There was an increase in C and CEC at 30-40 cm probably due to incorporation of topsoil into the subsoil during land preparation, but there were no changes in the 70-80 cm samples
