Experience of the Sugarcane Feeds Centre on the small scale farms programme
1983
Benn, A. | Martinez, L. (Sugarcane Feeds Centre, Longdenville (Trinidad and Tobago))
Milk production of a hypothetical 'well-managed' farm with greater emphasis on cultivated or maintained pasture was compared with that of an average farm which depends heavily on subsidized dairy ration. The latter produced 20 % lower through fewer cows in milk due to poor animal management. The monthly gross margin estimates showed that with the addition of labour costs, both farm types would only cover operating costs. A detailed cash flow statement for a better managed farm showed an annual cash difference of only $15,000 excluding labour costs. With the increase in 1983 in cost of concentrate, profits will decrease further. This may be offset by increased use of improved pasture which would entail greater management and machinery costs
