Mutagenic effect of pesticide "Prometrin" on the onion (Allium cepa) chromosome complement was analysed. None of the applied concentrations (0.02% and 0.05%) was found to reduce the mitotic coefficient significantly, but both of them brought about changes in the kinetics and behaviour of chromosomes. This pesticide has a characteristic cytostatic effect: it inhibits the mitosis in the metaphase stage and prometaphase positions are not visually different from the typical colchicine C-mitoses. Abnormal chromosome polarity was found in many metaphase figures. At the same time, quite a large number of polyploid cells on various ploidy levels, as well as numerous mitotic positions with structural chromosome aberrations were noticed.
