Results of the study of thinning cuts in mountainous beech forests (Fagetum moesiacae montanum asperulosum) on Magles [Yugoslavia]

Results of felling, being a measure of rearing in mountain beech forest (Fagetum moesiacae montanum asperulosum) in the mountain of Magles (Yugoslavia) show the following: The course and shape of the curve of tree distribution by diameter and height degrees shows the shape of binomial distribution, characteristic of the given developmental stage of even-aged forests. Thinning cuts lead toward creation of homogenous stands. No quantitative difference between thinned and control stands, regarding mean diameter development has been noticed. Increase of mean stand height is much greater in the control area, owing to denser canopy. High value of the current wood volume increment and achieved wood volume indicate high productivity of such forests. It is suggested that, with about 2,000 trees per ha, at about 35 years of age, the intensity of thinning should be about 25% of the total number and volume, with periodicity being 5-8 years. If the number of trees in this stage is reduced to 1,000 to 1.300 per ha, thinning intensity should be about 25% of the total number and volume, with thinning periodicity of 10 years.
