Nature of gene action for grain protein in nineteen crosses of bread wheat

The gene action for protein content was studied deploying parental, F1, F2, B1 and B2 generations of 19 crosses of bread wheat. Significant differences among generations were observed in all the crosses. The estimation of gene effects from all possible models fitting revealed that additive-dominance model was adequate for five crosses. Inadequacy of the digenic epistatic model in 4 crosses indicated the higher order interactions. Additive and additive x additive type of gene actions were more pronounced in the material. Dominance and dominance x dominance effects were significant in 8 and 7 crosses respectively, whereas additive x dominance interaction was a minor component of variation, being significant in 5 crosses only. Duplicate type of gene effects were also observed in some of the crosses. Biparental matings have been suggested for rapid advances for the development of high protein lines
