Effect of transplanting schedule and post-harvest time interval for threshing on milling and quality characteristics of rice

A 2-year study showed that total milling recovery of rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) did not vary conspicuously under different dates of transplanting and processing methods, although threshing on the day of harvesting gave higher recovery. The head yield obtained by milling parboiled rice was 10-30% more than that of raw milled rice. Medium duration, fine-grained 'PR 106' rice gave 4.4 and 9.3% more head yield of raw milled rice and 6.9 and 14.3% more head yield of parboiled rice respectively than 'Jaya' and 'PR 103'. The June-transplanted crop gave a poor head-yield recovery. Threshing on the day of harvesting gave higher head yield (6.5%) than that delayed up to 8 days. The July transplanted crop gave higher head yield (6.7-8.5) and protein (0.53-0.93%). The processed grains had better protein content
