The original maize(Zea mays L.) population, various cycles, and derived inbreds of the Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic(BSSS) were surveyed in limited samples for the presence of seven different active mobile elements. The seven mobile elements included Dt, Ac, En (Spm), Fcu, Uq, Mrh,and Bg, but only two,Uq and Mrh, were present. Of the five cycles tested and within the sampling procedure, one exposed both Uq and Mrh, and three had either Uq or Mrh, and one cycle showed neither. Their presence in the very small number of plants sampled (two or four) indicates that they are very prevalent in these populations and,in two instances, were either homozygous or had many copies. Neither the derived inbreds nor the orig1061inal population had elements present. Their possible effect in creating genetic diversity is discu
