Salmonellosis in Sri Lanka: isolation of salmonellae from goats slaughtered at a abattoir

A survey was conducted to detect the incidence of Salmonella carriers among goats slaughtered at the municipal abattoir in Kandy. 1932 samples collected from the liver, spleen, gall bladder, intestines and hepatic and mesanteric lymph nodes of 322 goats subjected to this study were examined for the presence of Salmonella organisms by standard cultural techniques. Salmonella isolations were made from the mesenteric lymph nodes of four animals (1.24%). Two of these were S. paratyphi B., one was S. newport and the other S. chittagong. This is the first isolation of S. chittagong in Sri Lanka. All the isolated were sensitive to chloramphenicol and penicillin
