Genetic of some agronomic and fibre trials in upland cotton

The nature of inheritance of seed cotton yield, lint yield, fibre length and fibre fineness using four intraspecific crosses of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were investigated. Heterotic effects and mean performance of the various generations indicate partial-dominance to over-dominance gene action for all the traits studied. Estimates of the minimum number of genes controlling these characters showed seed cotton and lint yields to be controlled by one to five genes, mean fibre length by one to nine genes and fibre fineness by one or two genes. The narrow sense heritability estimates were quite high with overall mean values of 57% for seed cotton yield, 51% for lint yield, 48% for mean fibre length and 50% for fibre fineness.
