Effect of time of weeding and plant density on the growth and yield of mungbean (var. Nubarik) [in Bangladesh]

The experiment was conducted during Kharif-1, 1985 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station Jamalpur, Bangladesh to find out the optimum time of weeding and plant density on the growth and yield of mungbean. There were five levels of weeding, no weeding, one hand weeding 10 days after emergence of crop (DAE), one hand, weeding at 20 DAE, one hand weeding at 30 DAE and one hand weeding at 40 DAE, and three different plant densities (30 cm x 10cm i.e. 3,33,333 plants/ha; 25cm x 10 cm i.e. 4,00,000 plants/ha and 20cm x 10cm i.e. 5,00,000 plants/ha). The highest grain yield (943.40 kg/ha) was obtained when the plot was weeded at 10 DAE but it did not differ significantly from the yield obtained by weeding at 20 DAE. Spacing had significant effect on grain yield. Highest grain yield (858.80 kg/ha) was recorded from a population of 5 x 10(5) plants/ha. The interaction effect was statistically significant. One hand weeding at 10 DAE given to the crop sown at a spacing of 20cm x 10cm gave the highest yield of 1285 kg mung grain/ha.
