Variation and yield in bambara groundnut (Voandzeia subterranea Thouars)

The variation in morphological and physiological characters and yield of 49 Voandzeia subterranea cultivars, planted in a complete randomized block design in wet and dry seasons, was evaluated. Variance analysis indicated marked differences of all the cultivars. High genetic diversity, moderately diverse yields, flowering patterns and seed-coat colours were observed. The ratio of canopy diameter to plant base spread of the cultivars were used to group them into bunch, open and intermediate types. Yield was positively correlated with 100-seed weight, days to flowering, flowering period, number of branches per plant and canopy diameter. 100-seed weight was the best selection index for the improvement of the inherent yielding abilities of the cultivars
