Organochlorine insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in two rivers in the Bristol area, U.K.

High levels of Arochlor 1254 were measured in surface water samples from the rivers Avon and Frome (U.K.). Analysis of tissues of various fish species revealed that the river Avon received effluents which contained three types of Arochlor. The organochlorine insecticides encountered in both surface water and fish samples were BHC's dieldrin, DDT and its metabolites. BHC's were the most prevalent in surface waters
