Relative importance of forage yield components in cowpeas under dryland conditions

Correlation and path coefficients between nine quantitative characters have been worked out from a field trial on forage cowpea under rainfed condition. Forage yield was significantly positively correlated with leaf weight, stem weight, plant height and branch number. Leaf weight and stem weight were positively correlated amongst themselves and also with plant height, leaf length and leaf width. Stem weight followed by leaf weight recorded maximum direct effect on green fodder as well as dry matter yields. Path coefficient analysis further revealed adverse direct and indirect effects of leaf number on forage yield. The forage yield of cowpea varieties tested under the rainfed condition decreased with increase in the number of leaf per plant
