ATPase Activity was assayed in endosperms and embryo axes of germinating rice seeds differing in salt tolerance under increasing levels of NaCl salinity. The activity was higher in tolerant than susceptible cultivars and such activity further increased under salinization. There appeared continuous increase in ATPase activity in embryoaxes of salt susceptible cultivars whereas endosperms activity decreased during 48-120 h of germination. Salinity caused marked inhibition in enzyme activity in susceptible cultivars. Based on the present study salt tolerance ability can be correlated with higher ATPase activity during germination and its further activation under saline situations
