Utilization of wild emmer (Triticum turgidum) var. dicoccoides in improving cultivated durum wheat [estimation of genetic parameters from crosses: genetic gain from selection, genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation; phenotypic correlation for different characters]

A diallel cross of durum wheat involving three varieties Hourani, Stork (equals Mexicali75) and wild Emmer Dicoccoides was made. Genetic studies were undertaken for protein content, plant height, tillers number, awns length, heading date and 1000 kernel weight in parents, as well as F sub(1) and F sub(2) generations. Combining ability indicated that all studied characters are quantitatively inherited and influenced by additive and non-additive gene action. Transgressive segregations at both sides were observed in plant height, awns length, heading date and 1000 kernel weight. Broad sense heritability ranged from 0.53-0.75, 0.78-0.93, 0.31-0.77, 0.38-0.49, 0.79-0.94 and from 0.24-0.82 for plant height, tillers number, awns lenght, 1000 kernel weight and protein content. Genetic advances in percentage of mean ranged from 20.77 to 28.05, 82.31-109.05, 14.66-25.50, 2.88-3.96, 18.46-34.41 and from 6.18 to 15.08 for plant height, tillers number, awns length, heading date, protein content, 1000 kernel weight. Phenotypic association among the six characters indicated that selection for early heading, tall and longer awns plant will produce more tillering and higher 1000 kernel weight, which may result in high yielding genotypes, particularly in Dicoccoides derived crosses. Protein content has poor associations with other characters except tillers number in the crosses of Dicoccoides x Stork and Dicoccoides x Hourani, in which significant positive associations were found with values of 0.365 and 0.286, respectively
