Nitrogen fertilizer response of rice in the paddy fields irrigated with different NH4-N content of waste water from night soil treatment

This study was performed to know the effects of waste water from night soil treatment on nitrogen fertilizer response and chemical property in paddy soils. Irrigation water was controlled with different levels of NH4-N; 0 to 20 ppm at the potted rice in 1986 and 0 to 10 ppm at the field in 1987. The rice cultivars planted were Samkang byea (indica X japonica) in the first year and Dongjin byea (japonica) in the second year. The results of this study were as follows. Waste water of night soil treatment was largely composed of nitrogen and salts, and NH4-N content of the water was gradually decreased about 10 percent per day. Increasing NH4-N content of the water increased EC and decreased Eh of a soil solution. The more NH4-N content of the water increased, the more T-N content and the less SiO2 content of rice plant were. The degree of T-N and SiO2 content were low gradually by NH4-N 10 ppm and was high rapidly at NH4-N 20 ppm. Height, number of tillers and dry weight of the rice plant were increased with the increase of NH4- N of the water, but rice plant was seriously injured with white head and lodging in the order of NH4-N 20 10 5 0 ppm by the typhoon. Yield was decreased 3-8 percent at NH4-N 5 ppm and 9-12 percent at NH4-N 10 ppm under standard nitrogen fertilizer application, and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer could be decreased about 20 percent at NH4-N 5 ppm and about 40 percent at NH4-10 ppm of the water in the field
