Effects of rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection, planting dates on grain yield, and total digestible nutrients of silage corn in Chinju area

To find out the optimum planting dates of silage corn for escaping rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), susceptible Suwon 19 and resistant Jinjuok hybrid were planted at 15 days intervals in Chinju area of southern Korea. Days to emergence were delayed by early sowing. The most effective planting date in reducing infection rate was recognized on April 15, May 1 and June 15 due to the infection rate below 20% at that time, however, the rates were very high by 29-88% at May 15 and May 30 planting. Infection rate was higher in Suwon 19 compared with Jinjuok hybrid. Culm lengths were higher at April 15 and May 1 planting and was shorter at May 30 planting. The relationship between infection rate of RBSDV and culm length was highly significant in negative correlation. Grain yield and total digestible nutrients were higher at early plantings and barren plants were observed by serious infections. The peak of small brown planthopper population occurred from middle June to early July, and the optimum sowing date of silage corn in Chinju area was considered as before May 1
