Morphology and cytogenetics of F1, BC, and BC2 of corn x Teosinte hybrids [Philippines]
1987
Huelgas, V.C.
Cytological examination revealed that corn, teosinte, F1, BC1 and BC2 had chromosome number 2n = 20. Incomplete homology of the two genome was manifested by irregularities noted at meiosis 1. Meiotic irregularities like laggards, loose pairing, bridges and unequal segregation at anaphase 1 were observed. These aberrations caused disturbed gamete function thus different pollen fertilities were obtained. Low pollen fertility was observed in plants that had more meiotic aberrations. Corn and teosinte, however, can cross and fertile F1 hybrids were obtained. Morphological data had shown that teosinte genes for tillering and multiple ears were incorporated to maize and were not lost even if backcrossing to corn was done. Ear diameter, ear length, number of kernel rows and number of tassel branches became more corn-like.
