Chemical composition of three azolla species (A. caroliniana, A. microphylla and A. pinnata) and feeding value of azolla meal (A. microphylla) in broiler ration, 2 [Philippines]

Three azolla species namely Azolla caroliniana, A. microphylla and A. pinnata were analyzed for their nutritive composition. Feeding trials using 96-day-old broiler chicks were conducted to establish the optimum level of azolla meal (A. microphylla) in broiler ration without affecting its performance. The birds were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments with 0, 5, 10 and 15% azolla meal, replicated three times with eight birds per replicate. The three azolla species varied in their composition considerably. On a dry matter basis, the values obtained ranged from l7.59 to 23.69% crude protein, 1.93 to 2.93% ether extract, 13.19 to 16.54% crude fiber, 1.67 to 2.07 calcium and 0.46 to 0.77 % total phosphorus. Unlike ipil-ipil, azolla has no mimosine but is comparable in gross energy, carotene and xanthophyll content. Average body weight gain of the birds were not significantly affected with azolla meal in the diet. Feed consumption of the birds increased significantly (P.05) at 5% and consistently increased with higher level of azolla meal in the diet. On the other hand, feed efficiency decreased significantly at 15% azolla meal. The roche color value showed that the dihydroxy pigment (DHP) of xanthophyll in azolla meal was prevalent as shown in the pigmenting effectiveness of shanks of birds at increasing level in the diet. Coefficient of digestibility of ether extract, crude protein, nitrogen free extract and dressing percentage did not differ significantly among treatments. Azolla meal (A. microphylla) inclusion in broiler ration was best at 10% although the growth rate of the birds was not affected up to 15% level.
