Weed control in rice (Oryza sativa) seedling nurseries [Philippines]
1987
Rao, A.N. | Moody, K.
Experiments were conducted in farmers' fields at Guimba, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] and at the International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna [Philippines] to test the efficacy of different weed control methods in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedling nurseries. Hand weeding was laborious and ineffective due to the morphological similarities between rice and Echinochloa species and the regeneration of perennial weeds. It was also injurious to rice seedlings. Manual separation of weed seedlings from rice seedlings before transplanting was ineffective when done at a fast rate and was laborious and time consuming when done at a slow rate. Thiobencarb, propanil, and quinclorac + bensulfuron-methyl were effective in controlling weeds in seedling nurseries without deleterious effect on rice.
