Ramos, L.A
Results showed that farmers' knowledge about certified seeds and their exposure to extension workers were significantly associated with the use of certified seeds. Positive attitude of the farmers towards certified seeds was found to have influenced the use of certified seeds. The availability of certified seeds at the onset of the cropping season is critical factor in determining the actual use of the seeds because there were no available supply at the time needed. The high cost of certified seeds had affected some farmers in their use of the seeds. Other farmers had resorted to use certified seeds alternately with non-certified seeds. The non-users resorted to using seeds from previous harvest. Although the farmer-users spent larger amount in production, they declared that the use of certified seeds is still profitable due to the much higher yield obtained. The desirable characteristics observed by farmers is significantly associated with the use of the seeds. The important characteristics were the pests and diseases resistance and high yielder. The use of certified seeds was likewise found to be influenced by available farm credit. The hypothesis of the study that the use of certified seeds is influenced by some extension, psychological and economic factors, is therefore accepted.
