Relationship between progesterone content in milk and milk fat

Progesterone content and percent fat were measured in milk samples of 12 post-partum caracows to determine the effect of milk fat on milk progesterone concentration during the different reproductive stages of these animals. Milk fat content did not influence progesterone concentration at estrus; progesterone values remained low, ranging from 0.05 to 0.8 ng/ml while fat content ranged from 2 to 11% in 18 cycles studied. At luteal phase, however, the active corpus luteum (CL) was manifested by higher progesterone values (peak levels ranging from 1.95 to 23.5 ng/ml) with milk fat and progesterone content was observed during the peak CL stage. The linear relationship between milk fat and progesterone values obtained was Y = 2.9 + 0.95 (X); where Y is the progesterone concentration and X is the milk fat content. During the first trimester of pregnancy, progesterone values were observed to be relatively higher than the levels during the luteal phase of estrous cycle; this could partly be attributed to the rising fat content as lactation progresses.
