Cattle production in agro-economic zone 16, Thailand: constraints and potential for development

Three components of cattle production were studied in agro-economic Zone 16, Chantaburi and Trat, Thailand, namely: cattle raisers, consumers and physico-biological features. Result of the study showed highly significant difference between cattle raiser's capital investment and size of operation (P less than or equal to 0.01). Low cattle production was affected by low awareness and adoption practices of cattle raisers, low knowledge of government extension programs and services. Cattle raisers indicated their interests in acquiring additional information on cattle breeds, feed supplement, and disease and parasite control measures. For a large farm size operation, such informations as knowledge about herd management practices, forage crops establishment, management and utilization, farm record keeping and analysis, and marketing and financing should be provided. Beef consumption pattern of consumers was affected by many factors. While the consumer's education did affect their beef preference (P less than or equal to 0.01), levels of beef and carabeef differentiation (P less than or equal to 0.05) and beef acceptability (P less than or equal to 0.01), the trend on increase consumption in relation to lower price was not affected. Income was found to affect beef consumption (P less than or equal to 0.05). Available resources in terms of land, farm by-products, energy feeds, protein feeds, and mineral supplements with high level of intention of cattle raisers to produce cattle production and higher demand of consumers were factors supporting cattle development in agro-economic Zone 16.
