Optimizing dosage efficiency of granular insecticides applied as soil incorporation for rice pest control [Philippines]

Soil incorporation of granular insecticides at a dose lower than 1.0 kg a.i./ha. applied prior to transplanting was evaluated last wet and dry season 1985 and 1986 on IR64, which is the most extensively planted variety in the Bicol region [Philippines] nowadays. The treatments were compared to three times broadcast application of Carbofuran and five times foliar spray of Monocrotophos at rates of 3.0 and 2.5 kg a.i./ha. respectively. Soil incorporated carbofuran at 0.50 and 0.33 kg a.i./ha. proved to be effective on whorl maggot control and showed extremely stable efficacy on rice stem borer and green leafhopper control up to 55 DAT [days after transplanting], thereby preventing tungro virus infections. The effect was comparable to broadcast application of Carbofuran and Monocrotophos. However, rice bug control was not achieved in Carbofuran treated during the wet season. Low insecticide input and high yield produce in soil incorporated Carbofuran at rate of 0.33 kg a.i./ha. resulted in highest net gain among treatments. One application of Carbofuran as soil incorporation prior to transplanting is relatively low in cost and control most pests throughout the vegetative stage, thus, obtaining a high benefit/cost ratio. Yield decrease in Carbofuran treated plots was due to high level of rice bugs in the wet season hence, the benefit/cost ratio for chlorpyrifos was higher than Carbofuran. However, in the dry season, higher yield was obtained in Carbofuran and Monocrotophos treated plots.
