Yield and agronomic traits of four variety hybrids and some local tall coconut populations in the Philippines

Started in Dec 1976, this study aims to test and compare the performance of four coconut variety hybrids from the IRHO with some local populations in several locations in the Philippines. After about eight years from planting, the study revealed the influence of variety on growth and development of the palms which, depending on location, may be slightly or strongly affected by the environment where they are grown. In general, the hybrids proved more precocious and higher yielding than any of the local talls in all test sites. The talls, however, showed prominently thicker stems, had more roots, had higher copra yield per nut and in most cases had better fruit composition. In contrast to the talls, the hybrids had less roots and had shorter and narrower drip circles, indicating of lower amounts of vegetative growth. Varying performance of the hybrids in the pilot farms strongly suggest the positive effects of favorable environment on yield and growth. The study further confirms the potential of the hybrids, and the local talls in general, and of the RCD x WAT, and LAG and SNR talls in specific conditions, in particular.
