Amino acids supplementation of high copra meal diet in pigs; 1: nutrient digestibility

Two digestion experiments were conducted to evaluate nutrient digestibility of 40% copra meal diet with amino acids supplementation in growing and finishing pigs. Experiment 1 involved 21 crossbred barrows averaging 24 kg liveweight randomly distributed to 7 dietary treatments, viz. corn-soy diet as the control and the treatment groups of 40 percent copra meal diet supplemented without and with lysine and methionine; lysine, methionine and threonine; lysine, methionine and tryptophan; all the 4 amino acids together; and 40% copra meal diet with a nutrient density equivalent to 105% of corn-soy diet. In experiment 2, 30 barrow pigs weighing 75 kg were randomly assigned to 6 dietary treatments. Total collection and indicator method with chromic oxide were used to determine the nutrient digestibility of grower and finisher rations, respectively. Addition of amino acids in high copra meal diet improved significantly (P.05) the following: the apparent digestion coefficient for dry matter (ADDM) and crude protein (ADCP); the digestible and metabolizable energy, apparent biological value (BV), the net protein utilization (NPU) of the rations.
