The countries in the Asia Pacific region vary to a wide degree in their efficiency of pig production. Among the important economic traits, very little success has been attained in selection for improved reproduction over the years, these traits being of a heterotic in nature. Performance-testing, even on the farm is not a common practice in the Philippines although they may be a realization of the importance of this procedure in selecting breeding stock. Improvement in carcass merit has resulted with correlated responses to PSS [porcine stress syndrome], PSE [pale, soft, exudative pork] and a decline in reproductive efficiency. Market pig production takes advantage of the prolificacy and mothering ability of the white breeds basically the Landrace and Large White, the growthiness of the Duroc Jersey and the meatiness of the Pietrain.
