Dose responses of yearling dairy heifers to concentrate supplementation levels in urea treated straw diets

Urea treatment increased crude protein (CP) of ash-fed straw by 4.3 percentage units which were narrowed down to 1.6 when dried and ground straw was analyzed. Voluntary feed intake which was not affected by concentrate supplementation to either treated or untreated straw, significantly (P.05) improved with urea treatment. Voluntary intake of UTS [urea treated straw] was depressed at 2 kg concentrate supplementation. In vitro digestibility of dry matter/organic matter of straw was increased (P.05) with urea treatment. Concentrate supplementation except at 2 kg daily did not increase in vitro digestibility. In vivo digestibility on the other hand improved at 1.0 kg supplementation to RS (46.66% vs. 42.21%) and starting at 0.5 kg to UTS (49.34% vs. 44.18%) no further increase in digestibility was obtained beyond this level of supplementation. Digestible dry matter intake (DDMI) which increased (P.05) with 1 kg concentrate to RS [rice straw] reached the peak at 1 kg supplement to UTS. Similar DDMI was obtained between RS + 1 kg concentrate and UTS rations (2.30 kg vs. 2.55 kg). Blood urea nitrogen at 3 hours after feeding for UTS, similar with or without supplement, was higher (P.05) than the counterpart for RS with or without supplement. Both urea treatment and supplementation did not affect total serum protein content.
