Enhancement of the feeding value of rice straw with rice forage silage

In a 4 x 4 Latin Square using 4 mature goats, 4 digestion trials were conducted to evaluate the feeding value of the following rations: 1-100% rice forage silage (RFS); 2-75% (RFS) + 25% rice straw (RS); 3-50% (RFS) + 50% (RS); and 4-25% (RFS) + 75% (RS). Comparative chemical analysis of RFS and RS and their combinations showed a consistent increase in organic matter and crude protein content as the amount of RFS increased from 25 to 100%. On the other hand, dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, acid insoluble ash and ash contents decreased. Lowest dry matter intake (DMI) ash % BW, crude protein digestibility and nitrogen retention were observed in Treatment 4 (2.7%, 64.35% and 0.64 g/day, respectively) and highest in Treatment 1 (4.01%, 74.31% and 3.07 g/day, respectively). Increasing the proportion of RFS from 25% to 75% significantly improved the feeding value of the diet.
